This is a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) elective Interacting with Veterans in a Jail Setting #4902 online training course for Texas Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.
This course fulfills the legislative mandate established by Senate Bill 1563 under Chapter 1701 of the Texas Occupations Code and meets the minimum state requirements for county corrections officer training.
In this dynamic and practical course, you will gain the essential knowledge and skills to effectively and respectfully interact with justice-involved veterans in a jail setting. Through a balanced blend of instructor-led presentations, case studies, and scenario-based exercises, you’ll explore:
Military culture and the veteran experience, including how service influences behavior, worldview, and response to authority;
Unique challenges veterans may face, such as trauma, mental health conditions, and reintegration stressors;
Trauma-informed approaches that recognize how past experiences shape behavior in correctional environments;
Effective communication and de-escalation techniques tailored to the veteran population;
Best practices for building rapport, reducing conflict, and promoting safety for both staff and inmates.
By the end of the course, you’ll be better equipped to understand the cultural, psychological, and behavioral aspects of the veteran population and apply trauma-informed, respectful approaches to everyday interactions in the jail setting.
Please note, the entire course, final exam(s), and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive four (4) hours of course credit.
