Overview

This is a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) elective Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Training for Jailers #2831 online training course offered for Texas Jailers, Peace Officers, and Telecommunicators.

This comprehensive online training program is designed for jailers to enhance their understanding and response to individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in correctional settings. The course covers key areas such as identification, communication strategies, housing considerations, and trauma-informed care for individuals with IDD. Jailers will learn how to recognize the signs of IDD and implement best practices to ensure safety, dignity, and effective management of inmates with these disabilities.

Key topics include:

Identification and Reporting: Methods for screening and identifying inmates suspected of having an IDD, and understanding the importance of early identification to ensure proper care and safety.

Trauma-Informed Care: Real-world scenarios and strategies for applying trauma-informed care when engaging with individuals with IDD, emphasizing safety, security, and minimizing victimization.

Communication Strategies: Techniques to facilitate clear and respectful communication with individuals with IDD, including considerations for inmates with autism spectrum disorder, using simple language, providing time for processing, and maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Management and Housing Considerations: Guidelines for assessing housing needs, ensuring appropriate placements, and promoting a safe environment for inmates with IDD.

Collaboration with External Resources: The role of Local Intellectual and Developmental Disability Authorities (LIDDA) and Local Mental Health and Behavioral Health Authorities (LMHA/LBHA) in supporting inmates with IDD, and the steps jailers must take when an inmate matches the IDD criteria.

Learners will engage with practical scenarios, role-plays, and discussions to develop the skills needed to identify, assess, and manage individuals with IDD effectively. By the end of the course, jailers will be equipped with the tools and knowledge to promote a safer and more supportive environment for both inmates and staff.
